The Kalia Foundation & Polynesian Seafaring Center

  • About Us

In the entire history of our planet, there is only one culture that defies the logic of their expansion and development.

  • Objectives

Revive and promote the history of Polynesian boats, proa, kalia, canoes and seafaring heritage

  • Projects

    Tongan Seafaring Center
    Kalia Millenium – Restoration

The Kalia Foundation is a non-profit organization developed to preserve and extend the Polynesian Seafaring tradition. The Foundation’s purpose is to support a variety of projects through a Seafaring Center in the Kingdom of Tonga. The Center will restore and maintain the MILLENIUM KALIA [pictured here], conduct research on Polynesian Seafaring techniques, voayaging, educate a new generation in Polynesian seafaring methods, and develop high technology sailing vessels based on traditional Polynesian designs. We believe that Polynesian Seafaring is more than a historical artifact. Sailors from other cultures have much to learn about the science of sailing and navigation from techniques developed in Polynesia. Our goal is to make the Polynesian Seafaring tradition accessible to sailors from all nations. The Center is operated by the Kalia Foundation – a non-profit [U.S. 501(c)(3)] organization. All donations are completely tax deductible.
