The Kalia Foundation & Polynesian Seafaring Center
The Kalia Foundation is a non-profit organization developed to preserve and extend the Polynesian Seafaring tradition.
The Foundation's purpose is to support a variety of projects through a Seafaring Center in the Kingdom of Tonga. The Center will restore and maintain the MILLENIUM KALIA [pictured here], conduct research on Polynesian Seafaring techniques, voayaging, educate a new generation in Polynesian seafaring methods, and develop high technology sailing vessels based on traditional Polynesian designs.
We believe that Polynesian Seafaring is more than a historical artifact. Sailors from other cultures have much to learn about the science of sailing and navigation from techniques developed in Polynesia. Our goal is to make the Polynesian Seafaring tradition accessible to sailors from all nations.
The Center is operated by the Kalia Foundation - a non-profit [U.S. 501(c)(3)] organization. All donations are completely tax deductible.

Flying Sails and the King of Tonga
Speed Sailor and Tall Ship Captain Mark Belvedere
travels to the remote island of Uiha in the Kingdom Tonga to fulfill a twenty-five year quest and attempt to break the all out world speed record for sailboats.
Mark invented the induced camber sail for his Proa sail boat and combines modern materials and techniques with a radical concept inspired by the centuries old tradition of the Tongan Kalia.
Flying Sails and The King of Tonga is a unique 90 minute look at a beautiful culture and tradition of sailing that is in danger of being
lost to history and Mark's goal of bringing the world's attention to the contribution of the ancient Polynesians by using their concepts to set a new world record for speed undersail.
Filmed entirely on location in the Kingdom of Tonga, near the island of Uiha in the Haapai Group.
